FAQ:

What mount does the Mandler 35mm F2 use?
The Mandler 35mm F2 is available in Leica M-mount and LTM configurations, depending on the selected variant.

What is the difference between M mount and LTM?
Choose M mount for Leica M cameras and compatible M-mount bodies. Choose LTM if you use Leica Thread Mount cameras or an LTM-to-M adapter setup.

What is the difference between Aluminum and Chrome-plated Brass?
Both versions use the same 35mm f/2 optical design. The Aluminum version is lighter and better for daily carry, while the Chrome-plated Brass version is heavier and has a denser traditional handling feel.

Is the Mandler 35mm F2 inspired by classic pre-aspherical 35mm lenses?
The lens is inspired by classic 7-element double-Gaussian rendering and is built with modern manufacturing and coatings. It is not a Leica product and should not be described as an original Leica lens.

What does spherical rendering mean for this lens?
Spherical rendering refers to the classic optical character associated with pre-aspherical lens designs, including smooth transitions, gentle contrast, and natural bokeh while maintaining practical sharpness.

What filter size does it use?

A Contemporary Interpretation of Classic Optics

Inspired by the classic optical structure, the Mandler 35mm f/2 combines contemporary precision manufacturing to create an optical product that blends traditional aesthetics with modern performance. It delivers high-level performance in color accuracy, flare control, and overall optical consistency, which not only reflects the reliability of its classic optical design but also represents the advancement of modern optical manufacturing technology. The launch of this lens aims to break the traditional notion that high quality must come with a high price, offering photographers a choice that balances optical excellence with affordability.

Mechanical Precision

The crescent-shaped focusing ring is designed with ergonomics in mind, delivering a smooth and precise manual focusing experience. The all-metal lens barrel, crafted with high-standard manufacturing processes, ensures stability and durability under various environmental conditions. The 10-blade circular aperture mechanism optimizes bokeh performance, creating natural and elegant background blur.

Optical Glass and Coating

The lens utilizes modern high-standard optical glass, precision-ground and inspected to ensure consistent optical performance in each unit. The meticulously calibrated purple-gold coating process not only enhances the visual quality of the image but also significantly improves color accuracy and depth.

Classic Optical Structure

The Mandler 35mm f/2 employs a seven-element, five-group double Gaussian optical design—a classic configuration that has been validated by optical designers for over half a century and stands as the most reliable solution for the 35mm standard focal length. The seven-element, five-group arrangement ensures a wide field of view while effectively controlling aberrations and optimizing color reproduction, striking a perfect balance between optical precision and practical usability.

Optimization of Optical Performance

Building upon the classic design, the Mandler 35mm f/2 leverages modern manufacturing techniques—such as lower-dispersion glass, optimized multi-layer coatings, and high-precision assembly—to significantly enhance its optical performance. This ensures its image quality meets the high standards demanded by contemporary digital photography.

Field Curvature: Center Sharpness and Corner Control

The field curvature performance of the Mandler 35mm f/2 is commendable. At F2.0 wide open, the central area maintains excellent sharpness, while the corners exhibit a smooth progressive falloff. By F5.6, the field curvature becomes more uniform, with a significant improvement in corner sharpness. This sophisticated optical design offers both the artistic shallow depth-of-field expression at F2.0 and ensures detailed full-depth-of-field recording when stopped down. Overall, the optical performance of the Mandler 35mm f/2 meets professional standards.

Distortion Test: Precision Control within ±0.5%

The Mandler 35mm f/2 demonstrates excellent performance in distortion testing. Distortion is controlled within ±0.5 mm, with the distortion percentage remaining within ±0.5%. The central area exhibits minimal distortion, while the corners show a smooth, progressive increase. This precise distortion control ensures straight lines maintain a natural perspective throughout the frame, making it well-suited for a variety of photographic applications such as architecture, landscape, and street photography.

Bokeh and Vignetting Characteristics

The Evolution of Bokeh Style

The Mandler 35mm f/2 exhibits gentle and delicate swirly bokeh at its wide-open aperture of F2. With a design that is sharp at the center and soft toward the edges, it produces an elegant and natural cat's eye effect at the periphery. This effectively separates the subject from the background while maintaining a soft, visually pleasing atmosphere.

Bokeh Transformation Across Aperture Stages

As the aperture changes, the bokeh undergoes an elegant evolution. At F2, it is the softest and most delicate; at F4, it becomes clearer and more layered; and at F5.6, the transition grows even smoother. This progressive transformation offers photographers rich creative control.

The Visual Effect of Vignetting

Vignetting is intentionally designed as a visual guiding tool. It naturally directs the viewer's attention toward the center of the frame, enhancing the visual hierarchy of the subject. The vignetting transition is smooth and natural, gradually fading as the aperture narrows, allowing photographers to adjust the aperture flexibly.

Artistic Interpretation from Street to Portrait

The Mandler 35mm f/2’s versatility makes it one of the most expressive tools in a photographer's hands. Whether capturing the gentle poetry of portraits, the decisive moments of street photography, or the everyday scenes of travel, this lens perfectly interprets the photographer’s creative vision through its unique optical language. The Mandler 35mm f/2 is not merely a lens—it is a complete extension of the photographer's creative expression. Built upon a classic optical design and integrated with contemporary precision craftsmanship, it offers every photographer an excellent portable lens choice.

FAQs

Should I choose M mount or LTM?

Choose M mount if you use a Leica M camera or another compatible M-mount body.

Choose LTM if you use a Leica Thread Mount camera, also commonly described as L39 or M39, or if you plan to use an LTM-to-M adapter.

If you are uncertain, send us the exact make and model of your camera at sales@mandler.shop before ordering.

Is this lens compatible with my camera?

The M-mount version fits Leica M and compatible M-mount cameras. The LTM version fits compatible L39/LTM cameras.

The lens can also be used on many mirror less cameras with the correct adapter. Compatibility and focusing behavior may vary, so contact us with your exact camera model if you are uncertain.

Does it have auto-focus?

No. The Mandler 35mm F2 is a fully manual-focus lens. Depending on your camera, focusing can be performed using the rangefinder, live view, magnification or focus peaking.

Aluminum or Chrome-plated Brass—which should I choose?

Both versions use the same optical design.

  • Aluminum: approximately 138g, lighter and better suited for daily carry and usage.
  • Chrome-plated brass: approximately 210g, heavier with a denser, more traditional mechanical feel.

Choose according to your preferred weight, finish and handling experience.

What is included?

The contents depend on the option selected at checkout. A Lens Only purchase does not automatically include a hood, UV filter or accessory kit. Check your cart and order confirmation carefully before completing payment.

What filter size does it use?

The Mandler 35mm F2 “7 Elements” uses E39 filters with a 39mm thread. Confirm that the filter is labelled 39mm or E39 before purchasing.

Which lens hood is compatible?

Choose a hood specifically marked as compatible with the Mandler 35mm F2 “7 Elements.” Current compatible options include:

  • 7 Elements Aluminum Square Lens Hood
  • 7 Elements Aluminum Round Lens Hood
  • Corresponding Basic or Premium accessory kits

The material and color do not affect optical compatibility, so select the finish that best matches your lens. Confirm compatibility on the accessory page before ordering.

What is the minimum focusing distance?

The minimum focusing distance is approximately 0.7 metres. Actual focusing and rangefinder behavior may depend on the camera body and adapter being used.

Is it weather-sealed?

No. Protect the lens from rain, moisture, sand and heavy dust. If it becomes wet, switch off the camera, remove the lens in a dry environment and allow it to dry naturally before further use. Do not apply heat.

Great quality lens at a fair and affordable price. Can’t wait for more focal lengths. Great everyday lens fom my Leica CL.

He is very happy with the lens. it is excellent! I would like to point out two things, though. First, the color printing of the numbers on the aperture scale could be improved, as after only two months they have already started to fade.
The second point is that the lens is probably actually f/2.5 rather than f/2. If you look closely, the aperture does open to f/2, but the diameter of the rear part of the lens barrel is smaller than what would be required for f/2, and it seems to stop at around f/2.5.
Despite these points, the lens is of very high quality, and considering its price, it is a very good purchase.

High marks for this lens. Build quality is excellent and the compact size is nice. Best of all the images I’m able to get keep me coming back to it. Nevermind that it is as cheap as chips.. Great job Mandler!

A fun, compact lens that suffers from build quality issues.

The results from the lens are great (love the bokeh) but the painting of the lettering on the lens is not consistent, the focus ring’s tension is not uniform across the full range (feels like there is a spot to “overcome” with extra tension), and the aperture ring rotates beyond the f2 and f16 stops.

If you can overlook issues like that, the lens is great.

Absolute magic on the Nikon Zf and Fujifilm systems!I am completely in love with this Mandler 35mm f/2 lens. The rendering is absolutely beautiful and has a distinct character that modern lenses just cannot replicate. On my Nikon Zf, the colors come alive—they are rich, and deeply atmospheric.I have also adapted it to my Fujifilm cameras, and the results are just as stunning. It handles beautifully on both bodies, adapting perfectly to both full-frame and APS-C formats. If you appreciate vintage character, micro-contrast, and poetic color rendering, this lens is a masterpiece. Highly recommended!

Such a great lens. Now only is the image quality great but it small and very well built. It is my most used lens on my Leica M5!

A heavy-hitting homage that makes you forget the Leica price tag.

From the second you mount it, the weight of the chrome-plated brass makes one thing clear: this isn't a cheap imitation.

The focus throw is buttery smooth, the aperture clicks snap into place with satisfying confidence, and optically, it captures that distinct classic character with ease.

Whether paired with film or digital, it handles like a precision tool rather than a budget alternative. It delivers all the tactile density, aesthetic charm, and mechanical perfection of the original 7-element legend at a fraction of the cost.

Ultimately, it stops you from overthinking your gear and simply lets you focus on being present in the moment. Exceptional craftsmanship through and through.

A bit disappointed that it will not focus on infinity. Have to send it to DAG for adjustment and cost me an extra $180.

Lens in all respects. I use it mainly on my Nikon z5II with a Techart adapter. Autofocus and tracking excellent. It is the sharpest lens in my arsenal including Leica, Voigtlander, and Nikon. And uyes it is the king of bokeh. Get it, you will be glad you did.

Excellent manufactured lens. Good sharpeness even wide open. Very sharp stopped down. Nice bokeh and flare in back light. Would buy it again! Looking forward seeing more primes to come!

When it comes to non native lenses, the Mandler is the one to choose. I’ve used VM and ZM glass prior, but for the price, the sharpness and build quality of the Mandler 35mm is tough to beat. I went to Japan recently and left all my other lenses at home because I trusted this so much.

Most people will say it's an excellent lens for the price. For me is an excellent lens with a great construction quality and outstanding performance. It is the lens I have on my Leicas 95 per cent of the time replacing my trusty Summaron 35 mm.

O am using the lens with a Lumix S5. I found it when I was looking for a good Leica type lens for use with L mount cameras. I watched several reviews before purchasing and am not disappointed. It's a lovely lens and works very nicely on the Lumix.

This is an exceptional lens and provides the best value 35mm lens for Leica M cameras. The build quality is outstanding and, optically, it rivals lenses 10x the price. I can't believe how good this lens is in its color rendition and image quality. Stellar work from the Mandler team

I’m impressed with this lens and I seem to be using it a lot more often than my other M lenses at the moment. I think the images this lens produces are very pleasing. The build quality is pretty good too when you consider the price for this lens. I’m really happy with my purchase, it is a very good lens.
